From Larchmont
By Dan O’Brien
On a bed of rock above the Sound
on Sundays in summer we’d sit in love
with each other and our black books—
yours for sketching, mine for writing
these poems of love for you. Streets away
past old folks’ homes like the skeletons
of whales, I mused, there was a church
I liked to pray in as a boy, and gaze up
at the cruciform rafters and think, We
are all of us sailing in an upturned boat
implausibly out of our protesting births
past grief, past silence, off this bed of rock
into the sea, this sound . . .
